Well it looks like VW isn’t going to buy my TDI back before I have to replace the tires, 205 55r16s are what it’s wearing now. tirerack has kumhos for about $80 thoughts or suggestions are welcome. As these are really a stop gap as my current tires are trashed and I just need to feel better about family road trips.
I live in Northern VA and as a school teacher I have no need for Blizzaks. All my road trips involve heading south towards Charlotte.

Buy some used tires from wherever. 10-20k miles should do it I’d think.

Bestusedtires.com has some pretty good used stuff. Service is excellent too.

Nexen P5000 Plus‘s are super cheap and they’ve held up well on my Mom’s Vibe.

I’d pick up some used tires and I wouldn’t even care if all four matched.

Craigslist or go used and save a bit of cash. Third option, buy new, keep the crappy set and swap crappy for new set when VW buys your car then sell the slightly used tires and recoup some cash.

I guess it depends on your plans for after the buyout. If you’re buying something with the same bolt patter and roughly the same size, I might just buy wheels and tires and then swap out on a new car. If you’re buying a new car afterwards, you could always negotiate for a nice set of summers or track tires to come with since you would already have a set of all seasons.

I’m usually not in support of used tires, but this seems like a good case. Go to a local tire shop and see if they have leftovers.

When I had my rally project it needed new three season fun A/S tires.. I shopped around and discovered the amazing world of third tier tire brands..
Introducing the Achilles ATR Sport;

215/60 16 out the door for less than $400. They were fun, squealed like mad, and threw rocks and mud like a champ..
They were probably made in a sweatshop - possibly contained lead, and may not have been period correct.. but I would do it again.
